Gabala Garment

Gabala Garment is my series of fashion pieces, displaying possum fur into fashion wear. Possums are native animals to Australia.
The suburb Capalaba means ‘Place of Possum’. Gabala is the Yagara word for possum.

Sustainability is important in Indigenous Australian culture, by caring for the land, water and animals. Taking only what we need to survive and giving our ‘thanks’.

The skin and fur of a possum were worn as clothing for warmth, as baby carriers and in traditional ceremony.

Each Coming-of-age Ceremony, an extra piece of possum skin or fur was added on to an existing piece of clothing such as, belts, headwear, cloaks etc.
